Principal Duties
Fire Investigation
- Determine cause and origin of fires
- Conduct investigations
- Prepare technical reports
- Assist in prosecution of criminal charges
Fire Prevention
- Review, approve and deny architectural and engineering plans for fire code compliance
- Inspect and test fire protection systems
- Inspect, approve and deny new and existing structures for compliance with codes and standards
- Provide technical assistance
- Develop and conduct training
- Inspection of new and existing structures for code compliance
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Must be a able to communicate in English (both verbally and in writing)
- Complete and successfully pass a Level III background (investigation, polygraph, medical, drug and psychological exams)
- Current Utah Fire Inspector I certification; or Investigator I certification; or POST certification; Peace Officer Standards Training in Utah
- Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
- Live within 50 miles of

The Agency

The DPS dive team, aero bureau, CERT team and Public Protection Unit (PPU) also fall under the Department of Public Safety.
