Role Description
This is a full-time, hybrid role for a Market Settlements Specialist located in Eden Prairie, MN. The Market Settlements Specialist provides all services associated with energy accounting, settlements and billing for members and scheduling customers.
Operational:
- Apply critical thinking to job tasks.
- Manage meter data.
- Represent CMPAS on project development and industry meetings as assigned.
- Keep abreast of relevant professional, industry, and inter‑utility developments and monitor changes that impact agency interests.
- Situational awareness of MISO/SPP and other appropriate energy market developments and readiness to act on actionable information.
- Ability to translate and assign MISO/SPP costs and contracts to members/scheduling customers on monthly billing statements.
- Analyze market settlement information, identify issues and resolve problems.
- Assist with system enhancements, product implementation, certification and testing criteria within the settlement department.
- Resolves member and scheduling customer questions, disputes, and data errors accurately and in a timely manner.
- Provide updates on task and system issues.
Analytical:
- Perform energy and transmission settlement’s function and conduct system modeling to ensure the accuracy of settlements.
- Work closely with accounting to ensure that accurate financials and billings are completed every month.
- Provide supporting details as needed for timely and accurate invoices.
- Ability to perform various in-depth studies using financial quantitative analysis including assessment of risks.
- Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions, uses effective approaches for choosing courses of action or developing appropriate solutions; take action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.
- Compiles, organizes and format data, including qualitative analysis required for internal and external reporting. Identifies and researches reporting issues, provides recommendations, and assists with adoption of new reporting requirements.
- Recognizes situations where the regulatory framework and rate case outcomes drive our business; Supports regulatory initiatives by gathering data and preparing regulatory schedules and/or preparing pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; Assists with review and analysis of regulatory documents; Appreciates the application of the regulatory construct to our business.
- Understands terminology and developments related to MISO and the market settlement process.
- Knows how reconcile the third-party shadow settlement system and financial statements
- Knows when to and can apply technical knowledge to processes, procedures, and tasks.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of financial statements, metrics and measures, and key strategic business initiatives; Understands and utilizes economic and industry data as it relates to job responsibilities Demonstrates a working knowledge of the MISO transmission and energy markets.
- Verify and prepare documentation related to the cash settlement process for MISO.
- Demonstrates our commitment to quality by documenting work fully and accurately.
- Take action to identify, analyze and improve existing processes within our organization to maximize opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness and meet new goals and objectives.
Skills and Competencies:
- Ability to communicate complex issues pertaining to transmission, energy, and capacity markets to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to use creative and abstract thinking and sound reasoning to solve complex problems.
- Strong understanding of financial concepts.
- Work Standards/Quality Orientation.
Education and Experience:
- BS/BA in accounting, finance, economics or other business discipline.
- In-depth Knowledge of energy and capacity markets.
- In-depth Knowledge of Regional Transmission Organization/Independent System Operators and transmission tariffs.
- 5+ years minimum work experience in the wholesale energy market.
Travel Requirements:
- This position requires occasional travel throughout the region and occasionally, other parts of the country. Overnight travel occasionally may be required in specific instances for training, conferences, etc.
- Having a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate motor a vehicle for extended periods of time is required.
