Senior Small Business Loan Underwriter
Flyte Funding
Flyte Funding is a small business lender on a mission to make working capital faster, more transparent, and easier to access for the businesses that keep our communities running.
We’re a founder-led, early-stage company headquartered in Wilmington, NC. We’re building a modern, largely self-service lending experience — and pairing it with disciplined, human credit judgment. This role is our first underwriting hire, and you’ll have a real seat at the table shaping how we make credit decisions from day one.
The Role
The Underwriter is a key participant in the credit decisioning process. You’ll analyze personal credit reports, business bank statements, and a range of business documentation to evaluate small business applicants, structure deals, and support our partners and customers in moving qualified opportunities to funding.
Because this is our founding underwriting role, you’ll do more than review files — you’ll help us build the playbook: refining underwriting guidelines, shaping our approval matrix, and partnering directly with the founders to evolve credit policy as we grow.
What You’ll Do
- Analyze personal credit reports, business bank statements, background checks, and other business documentation to make sound credit recommendations
- Underwrite a variety of industries — retail, restaurants, hospitality, healthcare, construction, professional services, transportation, and more
- Conduct counterparty research and verify business legitimacy (KYB), ownership structure, and merchant background
- Structure transaction terms — pricing, term length, payment frequency, and risk mitigants — to fit each merchant’s profile
- Communicate clearly with ISO partners, internal sales, and merchants in both written and verbal form
- Help finalize and refine underwriting policy, exclusions, scorecards, and approval matrices in partnership with the founding team
- Identify patterns in approvals and declines and recommend process or policy improvements
- Maintain accurate, well-documented files in our loan management system and supporting tools
What We’re Looking For
- 2+ years of underwriting experience in small business lending, MCA / revenue-based financing, working capital loans, or commercial lines of credit (strongly preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret business bank statements, including identifying NSFs, true revenue, daily balances, and existing stacked positions
- Comfort with personal credit report analysis (FICO, tradelines, derogatories, public records)
- Strong written and verbal communication; able to explain credit decisions clearly to non-credit audiences
- Detail-oriented, analytical, organized, and self-directed — comfortable in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
- Sound judgment and a strong sense of accountability; willing to defend decisions and adapt as data warrants
- High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field preferred
Nice to Have
- Experience with one or more underwriting platforms
- Familiarity with KYC/KYB tools
- Working knowledge of state commercial financing disclosure requirements
- Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace fluency
Why This Role Is Different
This is a founding underwriting seat at a lending startup. You’ll have direct access to the founders, real influence over policy, and the chance to grow into a senior credit leadership role as the team scales. If you’ve been an underwriter at a larger shop and want to build something rather than just process files, we’d love to talk.
