What is Outset?

Outset (joinoutset.com) is an education startup that runs immersive summer programs for teens interested in healthcare and medical careers. Hosted at leading university campuses, Outset helps high school students explore the path to becoming a doctor and what the career is really like.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a mature, responsible and organized Campus Director who can lead our programs at Rice University this summer. This is a 24/7 role during camp hours (see below) and requires someone who brings a positive energy and attitude, a love for working with teens, and enthusiasm for developing and inclusive community, even while working long hours. Directors must be 25 years old at minimum, and we prefer someone with prior camp/program management or teaching experience.

Responsibilities

The Director lives in the residence hall with our students and other staff and is in charge of overseeing and managing our academic schedule and extracurricular life.

● Running check-in and check-out for students and parents

● Managing our staff counselors (typically college-aged students) and ensuring high standards of professionalism and safety

● Communicating with parents and University partners

● Establishing a safe learning and residential environment

● Supporting our students and ensuring they have a fantastic week

● Overseeing spending and budget management

Locations, Dates & Hours:

● Location: Houston, TX (mostly at Rice undergraduate campus)

● Dates:

○ Pre-training prep day: July 8

○ Counselor Training: July 9-10

○ Session 1: July 12-17 (Sun-Fri)

○ Session 2: July 19-24 (Sun-Fri)

● Hours: Training days are typically standard workdays, ie 9am-6pm with lunch break. During sessions, Directors are on call 24/7 from Sunday ~12pm to Friday ~4pm (check-in starts 3pm Sunday and check-out is 2pm on Friday). There is some downtime but Directors are the main point of contact for safety and emergencies so they need to be available and nearby 24/7.

Compensation, Housing, Meals:

Compensation is $1200-1500 per session plus $250/day for the 3 pre-training and training days, paid as a 1099 contractor. You will also be provided with a private dorm room at Rice and meals at campus dining or restaurants during the week. If you are available for 10-15 hours of pre-program work as well (reviewing the schedule, doing some training calls, reviewing student forms, answering emails) we would compensate this at $40/hour.
