Summary Of Work
As the Construction Coordinator, you will perform construction related work inspecting, documenting, and overseeing onsite construction projects. This position will assist in planning, surveying, and designing projects for the Division of Facilities, Engineering and Environmental. We are looking for an energetic,detail-oriented person with knowledge and experience of construction and engineering to join our team.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work either within the Bismarck Office or our Devils Lake Office with a requirement to travel which may include overnight stays during the construction season. Work weeks may vary based on the workload. Project work may be conducted in all types of weather and requires walking and driving. Some manual labor may be required and lifting up to 50 pounds. The duties and responsibilities listed below are not all-inclusive:
- Review architectural and engineering plans and specifications for compliance with state and federal regulations and ensure that design formats comply with applicable guidance. Plans and specifications may be related to new construction, alterations and rehabilitation of streets, buildings, mechanical/HVAC systems, utilities and electrical systems. Provide sketches and layouts supplemented by verbal and written information for the preparation of design drawings of construction projects.
- Participate in the construction planning process by investigating proposed projects to obtain field data, check existing facilities and utilities as well as conceptualizing the scope of the finished project. Apply a practical knowledge of construction methods and techniques, architectural, engineering, and historical project information to insure project design requirements are met.
- Participate in pre-bid and pre-construction meetings, and provide construction features and requirements in terms of methods and equipment policies, regulations and quality standards.
- Coordinate construction operations with contractors and federal, state, and local agencies.
- Participate in post-construction award activities such as informing the contractor of project requirements, monitoring compliance with construction schedules, reviewing submittals, progress reporting, developing schedule of values, addressing safety measures and coordinating with in-house contracting and design staff.
- Conduct construction compliance activities such as representing the owner at construction meetings, conducting construction inspections to ensure compliance with contract documents, participating in substantial completion inspections, communicating project progress and issues to contracting personnel and the director. Conduct labor interviews with contractor employees as required.
- Identify and report problems or potential problems and recommend changes to Architect, Engineering Consultants, and the director.
- Investigate and advise the director on proposed contract change orders, review change proposals, negotiate costs, prepare government estimates and verify the availability of funds.
- Prepare requests for proposals and quotations with plans of the project.
- Complete a formal review of the contractor's work. Coordinate with contracting personnel to ensure projects are ready to be closed out and manage warranty items.
- Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and negotiate construction sites.
- Ability to travel in and out of the state as required.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
- Be a self-motivated and detail-oriented individual with good observation and documentation skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires an Associate degree in architectural, engineering, or construction management technology or a closely related degree.
- Five (5) years work experience in construction management that included planning, surveying, or designing projects. Experience must include oversight of onsite construction.

- Must possess a current Class D driver's license.
- Successful completion of the interview process, reference checks and background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to individuals that have the following:
- Project Management experience that includes oversight of construction projects.
- Experience managing contracts and contractors.
- Experience with a variety of technology including GIS, CAD, databases and computer-based data analysis.
- Experience applying environmental laws, rules and policies.
- Experience with electronic document submittal services, such as Procore, Newforma, Submittal Exchange, etc.
- Experience working with federal and state oversight agencies.
- Certified Construction Inspector or be certified in occupational fields.
- Three (3) years of supervisory experience in construction or in a closely related field.
- Experience with construction inspection and documentation.
