Civil Litigation Paralegal
Law Offices of Stefan J. Erwin, LLC
Company Description
The Law Offices of Stefan J. Erwin, LLC
is a regional law office which provides
individualized, client focused services
in New York and New Jersey.
Role Description
The Law Offices of Stefan J. Erwin, LLC, an established New Jersey practice located in Union, seeks an experienced civil litigation paralegal to join our small, collegial team. This hire will focus exclusively on the firm's civil litigation docket and will work alongside the firm's existing paralegal, who handles the criminal and traffic side of the practice. This is a hands-on position with substantial responsibility, well-suited to a self-starter who thrives without close day-to-day supervision.
Responsibilities
• Manage civil litigation case files from intake through resolution.
• Draft and prepare pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and discovery responses.
• Coordinate discovery, including document production, Bates labeling, privilege log preparation, and deposition support.
• Electronically file in NJ eCourts (Law Division and Special Civil Part).
• Maintain case calendars, monitor court-imposed deadlines, and track compliance with the New Jersey Court Rules.
• Share front-office coverage with the firm's existing paralegal, including inbound and outbound telephone calls — client intake, scheduling, and triage to the appropriate timekeeper.
• Share responsibility for the firm's email inbox: monitor, sort, route, and respond to routine correspondence; flag time-sensitive items for attorney review.
• Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, courts, and third-party vendors.
• Coordinate with the firm's existing paralegal (who covers the criminal and traffic docket) on calendar conflicts and overall workflow.
Qualifications
• Three (3) to five (5) years of civil litigation paralegal experience; New Jersey practice required.
• Working knowledge of the New Jersey Court Rules and proficiency with NJ eCourts e-filing.
• Proficiency with case management software (the firm uses Clio), Microsoft 365, and Adobe Acrobat.
• Strong written communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated self-motivation and the ability to manage assignments independently from start to finish.
• Ability to work cooperatively with a small in-house team, including the firm's existing paralegal.
• Paralegal certificate or equivalent practical experience preferred.
Compensation & Schedule
• Salary: $40,000 to $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
• Schedule: Hybrid — partially remote, partially in-office at the firm's Union, New Jersey location.
• Paid Time Off: Provided.
• Benefits Disclosure: As a small firm, we are not presently able to offer health insurance or a retirement/pension plan. We seek to offset that limitation with workplace flexibility, a manageable caseload, direct mentorship from the firm's principal, and substantive, meaningful work.
