Contract type: Full time

ABOUT LEVITCH ASSOCIATES

Levitch Associates is a Berkeley-based architecture and design-build firm established in 1960 with experience in residential remodeling and light commercial work. We design and we build — and that combination defines everything about our culture and the quality of work we deliver.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced Design Associate to join our collaborative design-build team. This is a full-time in-office role 4-5 days a week based in Berkeley, CA. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys being deeply involved in projects from initial concepts through construction completion and who values the connection between thoughtful design and real-world building.

The ideal candidate will have strong Revit experience, a background in residential remodeling, light commercial work, or both, and a genuine interest in construction administration and field coordination.

This is not a narrowly siloed production role. Team members at Levitch Associates are encouraged to engage in the full life of a project — including design development, permit coordination, consultant integration, construction documentation, site observation, problem-solving during construction, and ongoing collaboration with the construction team.

We value curiosity, initiative, practical thinking, and people who genuinely enjoy the process of turning ideas into well-built spaces.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Lead residential remodeling and light commercial projects from concept through design, permitting, and construction
  • Gather and coordinate all project information — site conditions, jurisdictional requirements, structural, mechanical, and finish specs — early and thoroughly
  • Produce and manage Revit models and full construction document sets
  • Collaborate directly with our builders and trades throughout construction
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients from design through project delivery
  • Contribute actively to a studio culture that values both design quality and construction knowledge

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Minimum of 5+ years of working experience
  • Strong Revit proficiency — you work in it daily and use it confidently for both design and documentation
  • Meaningful experience with residential remodeling, light commercial work, or both
  • A self-directed work style — you manage your own projects, anticipate what’s needed, and move things forward without being told
  • Genuine interest in how things are built and how design decisions affect the people doing the work
  • Strong organizational instincts — you front-load the hard questions and get all information on the table early
  • Clear, confident communication with clients, contractors, and consultants with a service-oriented mindset
  • A background in architecture or architectural design; licensure is not required but is welcome
  • Degree in architecture or related field is not required but is a plus

WHY THIS ROLE

We are architects and builders. That combination is intentional, and it shapes everything about how we work. Our projects are rooted in the East Bay — spanning thoughtfully crafted new homes and offices, complex remodels, nonprofit and educational spaces, neighborhood bakeries and cooperatives, commercial kitchens, and community-centered projects that contribute meaningfully to the East Bay — and we take pride in work that fits its context and holds up over time. The right candidate will see the design-build integration as a professional advantage, not a complication. We’ve built a culture around people who are genuinely excited about both sides of the process, and that’s who we want to grow with.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • $42–$58 / hour, depending on experience
  • Medical and dental insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company contributions
  • Paid vacation, sick time, and holidays
  • Opportunities for mentorship and growth
  • Professional yet relaxed creative environment in Berkeley
  • A team that regularly celebrates project milestones, company moments, and holidays together
