Summary

The purpose of the First Aid Responder is to assist in the evaluation, recognition, initial treatment and disposition of an individual who is injured or suddenly takes ill. This may include activities such as taping, stretching, first aid, and/or referral of injured/ill athletes. Other athletic training functions such as return to play decisions, modality or rehabilitation treatments are out of the realm of first aid responders.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Required

  • High School Diploma
  • Current first aid and CPR/AED certification
  • Valid Colorado Driver License
  • Employee must complete a fingerprint-based criminal background check and must be cleared by the Office of Human Resources
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary

Preferred

  • 26 semester hours or more of college credit in Sports Medicine field
  • Basic Water Safety Certification

Skills And Knowledge

  • Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction
  • Skill in communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a broad and diverse population of students, families, peers and colleagues
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions
  • Knowledge and training in first aid procedures should be required for handling athletic related injuries
  • Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Work surfaces will vary from concrete to grass to hard wood floors. Job responsibilities require both inside and outside assignments.
  • Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self- motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision. After hour work is required. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to assist with or transfer athletes of various weight/heights.
  • Must be able to push carts with athletic equipment on them.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances.
  • Must demonstrate ability to communicate to give adequate directions and instructions to subordinates. Must be able to carry training kit and coolers for long distances.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Actual duties, responsibilities, frequency, and percentages may vary depending upon building assignments and other factors.

  • Apply pre-event/pre-practice injury prevention techniques such as protective padding, taping and/or bracing. Encourage stretching when appropriate
  • Gather and make available the appropriate first aid / emergency supplies in support of the sporting activity or contest
  • Ensure that proper and adequate amounts of fluids are available to the athletic participant during a practice session or contest so as to prevent dehydration and heat illnesses
  • In the event of an acute injury, apply triage principles to rapidly assess the situation and administer appropriate emergency care in keeping with her / his level of first aid / CPR knowledge of certification
  • Apply the principles of the "PRICE" (Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) protocol and other American Red Cross approved first aid measures to acutely injured individuals
  • Notify a Certified Athletic Trainer, Medical Doctor, or Emergency Medical Technician if appropriate, based on the severity of the injury
  • Follow the standing orders of an attending physician to provide ice following practice or events to previously diagnosed, chronic inflammatory musculoskeletal conditions
  • Accurately maintain appropriate records of preventative measures taken, injuries, and care given. Update Athletic Trainers updated with changes.

Work Environment

Employee may work inside and outside in all different weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat. Employee may be exposed to body fluids and blood borne pathogens. Regular exposure to loud noises associated with athletic events.
