The Iowa Motor Truck Association was established in 1942 and has been the voice of the Iowa trucking industry for over 80 years. Headquartered in Des Moines, IMTA represents nearly 400 trucking companies, suppliers, and industry partners of all sizes, employing thousands of people throughout the state of Iowa. Our mission is to promote the success of the trucking industry in Iowa. This means we advocate for a safe, strong, and successful trucking industry that supports Iowa’s economy and keeps goods moving across the state and nation.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications and Projects Director plays a critical role in advancing IMTA’s mission by developing and executing strategic communications that promote the trucking industry, engage members, and build public support. This position also manages key projects and initiatives that deliver value to IMTA’s members in addition to supporting association events, advocacy campaigns, and internal operations.

The ideal candidate is a creative storyteller, skilled project coordinator, and strategic thinker who is passionate about the transportation and logistics sector.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications & Membership Engagement (60%)

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy focused on informing, engaging, and retaining IMTA members.
  • Create high-quality content for member newsletters, emails, website and social media updates, annual reports, and other printed materials.
  • Lead membership engagement initiatives, including member communications, surveys, recognition programs, and campaigns to increase member participation and retention.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for member inquiries and communications, ensuring timely and professional responses.
  • Draft press releases, talking points, and advocacy materials to support IMTA’s legislative and regulatory priorities.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with member companies, helping communicate the value of IMTA membership and industry successes.
  • Support crisis communications and rapid response efforts when needed.

Project Management (40%)

  • Manage key association projects and support events, including the annual management conference, webinars, training programs, and other member events.
  • Oversee project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful execution.
  • Track project progress and provide regular updates to association leadership.
  • Support membership initiatives, including recruitment/retention campaigns and member communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, Project Management, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of relevant experience in communications, membership engagement, project management, or association management.
  • Proficiency with graphic design and project management tools.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to produce clear, professional, and persuasive materials for both members and external audiences.
  • Proven experience developing and executing membership engagement or stakeholder communication strategies.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small-team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email marketing, and basic content management systems (CMS).

Preferred

  • Experience working in a membership-based organization, trade association, or nonprofit.
  • Familiarity with the trucking, transportation, or logistics industry.
  • Proficiency with graphic design and project management tools.
  • Knowledge of membership management systems (e.g., association management software).
