The role

The Director of Assessments is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and quality assurance of assessment and feedback across all five years of the MBChB programme at Bristol Medical School. The post holder ensures alignment with GMC requirements, university regulations, and best practice in assessment.

What will you be doing?

You will lead how assessment and feedback are designed, delivered, and improved across our five-year MBChB programme. This is a senior, strategic role where you’ll shape how we measure student learning and progression, ensuring assessments are fair, inclusive, and aligned with national standards.

You’ll work closely with academic, clinical, and professional services colleagues to:

  • Set and deliver the programme’s assessment strategy
  • Oversee all exams and assessment processes, from written tests to clinical OSCEs
  • Chair exam boards and guide progression decisions
  • Lead and support a dedicated assessment team
  • Ensure high standards of quality, consistency, and academic integrity
  • Represent Bristol nationally and contribute to sector-wide conversations

You’ll also support staff development in assessment, engage with students to improve their understanding and experience, and play an important role in continuous improvement and innovation.

You should apply if

We welcome applications from experienced clinicians or educators who are passionate about medical education and assessment.

You’ll Likely Bring

  • Strong experience of designing, delivering, or leading assessments in medical education
  • A clear understanding of regulatory frameworks (e.g. GMC standards, MLA)
  • The ability to lead teams and work collaboratively across disciplines
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in guiding complex decisions
  • A commitment to fairness, inclusion, and high-quality student experience

You must hold a primary medical qualification and be eligible for GMC registration. Experience of leadership across multiple years of a programme, or national collaboration, would be an advantage.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and those committed to inclusive education.
