TEACHER: SUSTAINING THE FUTURE SUMMER ECO-MAKERS CAMP (at POLK MS)

This program will serve outgoing students in grades K-5, with priority to Rio Grande feeder schools. The STF Eco-Makers Summer Camp is NOT based on a remediation model, but a high interest, hands-on Inquiry and Environmental STEM summer camp opportunity providing staff more time to teach as well as extending the school year for those students who want more time learning. The program is based on 6 pathways: Robotics, Gaming, 3D printing, Drones, Nature Art, and Circuits. Teachers will receive extensive professional development and use materials purchased specific to their selected classroom pathway. These materials will also be available for teachers to use with students during the 2026-27 school year. Experience in these pathways is not required.

Essential functions: Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Coordinates and provides academic instruction to elementary school students.

Teachers who apply for these summer job positions must be willing to collaborate with summer peers, design high interest, hands-on, project-based lessons for students and be comfortable working with all students K-5. Teachers must also be willing to participate in daily outdoor learning. Students in this program will come from a variety of academic backgrounds, including identified Multilingual Learners and students receiving special education services. Program teachers must be able and willing to meet all students' needs. All teachers must have the correct license/endorsement/credential on file with APS HR prior to working this program. Staff will co-design curriculum and framework. Teachers will work as pathway and site teams to deploy the program.

Preferences

  • Background in outdoor learning, STEAM and project-based learning
  • Working with multi-age groups in a variety of settings
  • Experience working in the outdoors
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset in developing a new program
  • Learn and apply knowledge quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced setting
  • Knowledge of and experience with providing mandated IEP and 504 program modifications and accommodations.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations’ in-person and on the telephone.
  • Knowledge of the APS community, computer system, financial procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies, and child abuse/neglect.
  • Knowledge of all laws, regulations, and guidelines affecting teachers and students.
  • Knowledge of effective classroom management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, community members, and staff.

Teachers MUST commit to work ALL days and training days; there are NO substitutes during this program.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS: The minimum requirements for this job are as follows:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Current New Mexico teaching certificate in the specified content area
  • Additional requirements may be applicable to specific positions.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

  • The program will be housed at Polk Academy of Agricultural Science.
  • Students attend from 9:00am-2:00pm M-Th, June 8-18 .
  • Teachers’ contract is June 1-18, M-Th 8:30am-3:00pm with a 30 minute duty-free lunch and daily prep time.
  • A student showcase will take place June 18 within camp hours.
  • Up to 4 teacher training days will be scheduled June 1-4.
  • Teachers will be compensated at their hourly rate for all training and orientation.
  • Staff collaboration and planning will also take place regularly both before and during the program.
